How To Avoid Getting Fired

How To Avoid Getting Fired Being terminated from a job is scary. Reality is, it’s not always your fault, but in some cases, there may have been steps you could have taken to prevent it from happening. There are usually three reasons why you could get fired, says Debra Benton, co-author with Kylie Wright-Ford of the new book, The Leadership Mind Switch.?Debra shared with me the ways you can do something about two out of those three reasons. These are three reasons you could be fired and what you can do about it: You lie, steal, or cheat. Clearly this one is totally under your control. The simple resolution â€" don’t do it! The company is doing poorly. Weak sales or bad management could cause the necessary cutbacks. You likely have little control over either, unless you are the head of sales or the lousy boss in question. You require more managing than your boss is able to give you. This one is your own doing and you can do something about it. If you create more problems than your boss can handle, or if you make her job more difficult because you require excessive handholding or coddling, you are likely to get fired. Let’s look at this from your boss’s perspective. You are hired for one reason: to solve problems. Your function might be as an accountant, machine operator, or a technical advisor; your job is to get done what needs to get done. A good boss makes your job objective clear, provides tools to meet the objective, and is there to answer questions and guide you as needed. When you don’t listen to your boss, use the tools that are available to you, understand the objective, meet the objective, or abdicate your responsibility for understanding the boss’s needs, she can choose to give you the additional time and attention that others don’t need, or not. Occasionally that is expected and accepted. But if you continue to require too much of her time and attention to get your job done, she is going to make the decision to find someone who doesn’t. It’s that simple. So what can you do to make sure you don’t require more managing than your boss is able or willing to provide??Understand that your boss has bigger responsibilities over and above just managing you. Find out her own job objective and where you can help her. Do the best job you are capable of and check in to see if it met her objectives. Don’t whine, complain, be late on deadlines, spread gossip, or get involved in any activity that causes your boss to stop doing what she needs to do in order to deal with you. Yes, there are usually three reasons why you could get fired, and you control two of them. Two out of three isn’t bad! Common Job Search Mistakes Anybody Can Make

Common Job Search Mistakes Anybody Can Make AARPs website and magazine will often have very good career advice. Kerry Hannons slideshow about 8 Common Mistakes Older Job Seekers Make   is targeted to the older worker but actually could apply to all of us. Heres why: Mistake: kicking back taking a break. The problem isnt in taking a needed vacation, but in failing to maintain an active presence in your field. Try blogging or consulting so when you resume your job search, you have evidence you didnt stagnate. Mistake: using dated email accounts. Its an excellent idea to have a dedicated professional email account that is your name, your initials last name, or your name + your expertise. But make sure its also a currently respected address. AOL Yahoo are not going to work like Google or Outlook to enhance professional image right now, but these things change rapidly so pay attention. Mistake: low or missing digital presence.  Privacy is not the same as invisibility, and most potential employers will look online. Social media and LinkedIn profile development  are no longer optional for professionals. Mistake: refusing to be flexible about salary requirements. You may be offered a lower wage but can negotiate compensatory perks, for instance. Looking at the bigger salary picture can get you in the door. Mistake: overlooking contacts.  You never know who you will run into again, who can introduce you to your next boss, or who is going to be helpful. Ideally you are being helpful to the others in your network, too, because it goes both ways and comes around again. Mistake: overdoing your resume. If it is bloated with outdated detail, hard to read, and over two pages, you overdid it. Time for a resume update! Do your research and make it concise. They can ask you for more detail in the interview. Mistake: ruling out jobs. It may not be a perfect fit, but a job that is mostly a good fit will be perfect with the right attitude. Mistake: waiting for the perfect job to open up. Heres the truth: there is no perfect job. Thats okay, because people arent perfect anyway. The same skill set and experience can transfer beautifully into any number of possibilities so be open to them all. These mistakes are certainly not limited to any age group. If you have been making one, fix it and you could find that next job!

5 Dangers Of Online Resume Samples - Work It Daily

5 Dangers Of Online Resume Samples - Work It Daily No one wants to spend money they don’t have to. If you’re in a job search, you may be tempted to try writing your own resume using samples you find online instead of hiring a resume writer. It's an investment, so it’s understandable you might want to save the money and DIY. However, the strategy of using content from resumes found online might end up costing you more in the long run. Dangers Of Online Resume Samples Many people don’t realize there are some possible negative consequences to using online samples. If you get tempted to recycle content you find online in your resume, heed these words of caution first. What’s the worst that could happen? Here’s what has been the result for some of my clients before they came to me: 1. Inauthentic One client just didn’t feel like the resume she wrote for herself was really “her.” That’s because the words used by a professional writer are chosen because they represent that individual’s personality and talents well. Just because a word is commonly used in many samples, doesn’t mean it honestly describes you or is appropriate for your profession. The result is a document that just doesn’t match the personality of the candidate. 2. Errors Clients come to me all the time with serious errors in their DIY resumes. There are many nuances of resume writing that take years to study and apply accurately. Grammar, formatting, and words that are overused or inappropriate for a resume can't be learned quickly from looking at samples online. 3. Outdated Design Or Content One client looked online and wrote his own resume from samples only to hear me tell him how outdated it was. (Sorry!) He was pretty mad at himself for wasting the time after I explained that some “resume” websites are scams with incredibly antiquated samples, hoping to attract folks who just don’t know what an excellent, current resume looks like. (To avoid a scam site, look for a real person as the owner.) Note: Even some very talented resume writers sometimes have outdated samples on their websites. Staying current with the latest best practices is important to good writers and using these techniques in everyday writing for clients takes priority. Sometimes updating resumes on the website falls to the wayside until samples really need to be overhauled. To be cutting-edge, stay away copying from samples. If you're networking, (I hope you are, because you’re much more likely to see success with a little help from your friends) do you want to hand your contacts something outdated that could embarrass you later? 4. Not Strong Enough Using content that was originally written for another person can sound generic and weak when reused. It’s crucial to describe your unique successes with language that substantiates the claims you are making about yourself. Please don’t be tempted to use overly general descriptors from samples online to fill out your resume. It will just sound lame. It is extremely important for those who have extenuating circumstances in their career to have a strong resume. If you’ve been let go, taken a sabbatical, made a big change, then you NEED to have every advantage. If you are applying online (tough enough for candidates who don't have difficult issues to overcome) do you want to risk your resume not making the cut because someone else had a much stronger one? When my clients use their resume that really packs a punch, plus networking, they see results so much faster! This is what you really must be focusing on to shorten your search. 5. Illegal One client of mine was in a hiring capacity at her job. She told me that she always Googled the content of candidates’ resumes before interviewing them to be sure the person hadn’t just copied it from a website somewhere. If you use wording from other writers' samples, you could be breaking copyright law. Be careful with this. Being a plagiarist doesn’t make you look good in the eyes of an employer. The sample page on my website has a warning to this effect, but not all do. Given all of this, is it possible for you to write your own resume well? Maybe. It depends on whether you have the time to research how to do it properly, the expertise with the software, the ability to know what will resonate with the employer, and can create original content without copying others’ work. Of course, it might be better to just hire a writer. I even had help with mine! Whatever you decide, just please don’t use content from samples online. Enjoy this article? Should You Include a Soft Skills Resume Section - Jobscan Blog

Should You Include a Soft Skills Resume Section - Jobscan BlogPosted on June 18, 2018November 16, 2018 by Bethany Wallace Before focusing my business solely on soft skills solutions for companies and organizations, I offered resume writing services and worked with hundreds of individual job seekers. I created a soft skills resume section for my clients who received excellent feedback from employers and began landing interviews and job offers.Of course, I recommend revising your entire resumenotlage just this sectionbut I strongly believe a tailored soft skills resume section will set you apart in your job search and improve your odds of landing interviews. What are soft skills?Soft skillsinterpersonal skillsare a combination of talent and ability. In todays world, many employees havent been taught essential soft skills and arrive at work lacking basics like time management, communication skills, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and more. Why employers scan for soft skills on resum esEmployers cannot afford to hire candidates with weak soft skills. When they do, they invest significantly in new hires (throughout the hiring, onboarding, and training process) who will not be retained long-term. Poor hiring decisions affect productivity, collaboration amongst team members, morale, and company culture, too.Did you know that 67% of HR managers said theyd hire a candidate with strong soft skills even if technical skills were lacking, while only 9% would hire someone with strong technical skills but weak soft skills? And that 93% of employers claim that soft skills are an essential or very important factor in making hiring decisions? The bottom line is soft skills in the workplace is a big deal, and thats not going to change. If youre revising your resume, understand that if you dont highlight your soft skills and indicate specific ways youve showcased those soft skills in the past, employers may have to pass. Hiring a candidate who demonstrates poor soft skillsor who is silent about these skills altogetheris risky. How to determine which soft skills to feature on your resumeWhich 3-5 skills would you consider your best assets? It may be difficult to identify your strongest soft skills on your own. Get some help. Work with a career coach, your career services staff (if youre in college), or check out a great list of soft skills zugnglich to get your brain churning. Talk to people whove worked with you in the past or former classmates. Ask them to help you identify which soft skills youve demonstrated repeatedly while working on projects.Identify a job youre interested in applying for. Did you know that most job postings can be broken down into three main components company/organization description, job functions, and job requirements? Check out the job posting. Look for mention of soft skills throughout the job posting. In most cases, you will find these skills mentioned in either job requirements or job functions. Employers are desperately seekin g candidates who already possess essential soft skills. It makes more sense to hire someone who does not require six months of training in communication skills than to hire someone who does. Now you get to play match-up. Compare your top 3-5 soft skills with the skills preferences or requirements in the job posting. Hopefully the employer is looking for the same skills you feel are your greatest assets.Jobscan can help automate this process by identifying soft skills in the job description and comparing it to whats already on your resume.Try it yourself here? What if none of them match? Ask yourself a few questions.A) Am I really qualified to apply for this position?B) Do I possess the soft skills the employer is looking for, even though I dont feel theyre my top 3-5?If you can answer yes to these two questions, carry on.Creating a soft skills section for your resumeNow that you know which soft skills to highlight on your resume, create a specific skills section. Call it something sim ple and straightforward. Soft skills highlights works fine. You want to create no more than three bullet points featuring three soft skills in this section. Keep it simple and short. Each bullet point should summarize an example of a time when you demonstrated the soft skill youre highlighting. Think of these bullet points as soft skill accomplishment statements. Remember to quantify and qualify your examples whenever possible. Here are two examples to get you startedManages, multiple tasks, completing projects on time Trained 450+ students in computer skills, maintained elementary school library, ordered library materials, managed 12 staff members.Strategic problem-solver Moved organization from fully-insured contract to self-insurance saved $400,000 by negotiating with vendors.Lastly, keep in mind you cant create this section once and never look at it again if you want to create a hard-hitting resume. You should tailor this section each time you apply for a job. Why? Because each i ndustry, company, and job role requires a unique set of soft skills. Each job posting will make it clear which soft skills you need to fit well within the organization and to succeed in the job role. This section is not just an opportunity to showcase all your assets. Its an opportunity to match your assets to the companys preferences. Bottom line Its not just about you. Its a two-way street, as with everything else in the hiring process. One final thought keep in mind that in order to highlight your soft skills on your resume, you must possess them. If you find yourself lacking great soft skills, do something about it. Seek some training or coaching. Dont wait until your lack of soft skills causes you to miss a great promotion or to lose a terrific business opportunity.Bethany Wallace helps facilitate communications transformation in the workplace through implementing soft skills solutions.
